Domestic PV:
There are many thousands of domestic PV installations across the UK, and therefore plenty of recorded studies of the installation costs, the performance of the installation, and the energy output.
Even before we visit your property for a survey, we can often give you a reasonable idea of the cost for an installation, the levels of energy it may generate and what this may represent as savings on your purchased electricity and revenues from exports to the grid.
As a guide, the following may be useful:

A domestic installation typically starts at around 1.5kWp
This means that in optimum light conditions the system is generating 1.5kW at peak.

For a 3-bedroom house with an appropriate aspect and roof pitch, we would probably suggest that you install sufficient PV panels to generate 2kWp, producing 1,300kW hours per year. Under these conditions, this installation would produce around 40% - 50% of the electricity requirements for that house.
You can go slightly larger of course if you have sufficient roof space, but keep in mind that a proportion of your electricity will be consumed outside the hours of good light.

The costs for an installation of this nature would be in the region of £12,000 before considering any grants that may be available.

For each kW of electricity you generate, you are paid 41.3p
This applies for installations up to 4kW, which encompasses the majority of domestic installations. If you’re incorporating PV into a new home, you are paid 36.1p per unit.

Either way, this income is yours, regardless of how much of this electricity you use and how much you export. When you’re not using the electricity, it’s automatically exported to the Grid, and earns an additional 3p per unit.
Remember, solar PV works equally well from other buildings - such as a home office in your garden.
So the net financial return in the example above is as follows:
Installation:   2kWp
Installation cost:   £12,000
Generating:   1,300kW hrs/yr
Annual income generation tariff: 1,300 x 41.3p £536.90
Annual export tariff: 750 x 3p £22.50
Saving: House avoids having to buy in half its electricity: £480.00

Total return:   £1,039
Representing a return of:   8.65%
